I recently had the privilege of working directly from an artist of great importance to me, Bronzino. This dialogue gave me new insight about my own work. I am keenly interested in and aware of the fusion of real and ideal in certain portraiture.
The outcome of a sincere effort to be true to one’s subject, yet another purpose, conscious or unconscious, whether it be propaganda, flattery, societal belief, religion, etc.--the transcendence that occurs when this balance is perfect—to me, it’s magic. Alchemy.
It seems that, if not always, then very often, humans have needed to create archetypes and symbolic figures. Whether Greek myth, Hindu god, or golden woman perched atop a municipal building, we crave the presence of these beings. That is the force behind my work.
